Our Goal

The goal of this project was to learn how tree health (overall tree condition and amount of open leaf stomata), soil quality (texture and chemical composition), and lichen growth (type of lichen and concentration) affect each other. Overall tree condition includes the health of the branches, leaves, trunk and bark. The amount of open leaf stomata is an indicator of the air quality surrounding the tree. Certain trees grow better in certain soil textures and require specific elements like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to function properly. Lichen, like open leaf stomata, are indicators of good air quality. These factors individually may suggest one thing about the performance of the tree, but collectively may indicate something completely different. We hypothesized that tree health increases as soil quality and lichen growth increases.
